Frequently Asked Questions

About the H.O.P.E. Cancer Support Group

Q: "I already have my own support system. Why do I need to attend a group?"

A: We recognize how important an existing, natural support system is and encourage you to maximize the support that you already have in place. Cancer often presents a unique set of challenges and experiences; however, many cancer survivors find it helpful to speak with others who are facing or have faced similar situations.

Q: "I don't like the idea of sitting around with a bunch of cancer patients, listening to them complain about cancer. Why is being a member of this group so important for me?"

A: Our group has been going strong for several years. The heart of its success is the strength and resilience of its participants. The H.O.P.E. group is comprised of people with a variety of cancer experiences. Although we talk about the stress and difficulties that people are faced with, we do so in a way that promotes hope and is uplifting. We sometimes discuss serious topics. But we also appreciate the healing power of laughter.

Q: "My battle with cancer is a private matter. Do I have to share a lot of personal stuff?"

A: We agree that your approach to cancer is a private matter and a personal journey for you. Sometimes the idea of sharing in a group setting does not sound appealing. You can discuss as much or as little as you would like. Some newcomers just sit and listen at their first meeting, while others are eager to engage in group discussion. We encourage you to give it a try and see if there is a benefit for you.

Confidentiality: At the H.O.P.E. group we understand the confidential nature of the information shared. We maintain a commitment to keep the information shared during group sessions confidential.

Q: "I have to come to the Cancer Center enough already. Is going to this group meeting really worth making another trip?"

A: We recognize that cancer treatment often requires a lot of time and travel. If you are interested in attending the support group but are concerned about the demands of an additional trip to the Cancer Center, please speak with a member of your treatment team. A Monday afternoon treatment time can likely be arranged that would allow you to participate in our group.

Q: "I don't like to talk about cancer. Why should I come spend an hour and a half talking about it with strangers?"

A: It's common for people faced with a stressful situation to side step the topic in order to avoid emotional pain. In our experience people who can face stress in a supportive setting are more effective in coping with it. While those who avoid dealing with difficult issues struggle more in the long run. We think the 90 minute investment will pay off for you. And remember, we like to have fun, too!
