POCATELLO — With the official opening of Portneuf Medical Center’s Total Joint Center on Tuesday, residents in the region who anticipated trekking to Salt Lake City for specialized care when having knee, hip, shoulder or other such surgeries, now have an option much closer to home.

Gus Blad, a nurse practitioner for the Total Joint Center, said creating the specialized orthopedic service began about three years ago when the hospital began recruiting some of the specialized personnel needed for the center.

“You can still expect the same high quality care,” Blad said. “It’s just that now we are going to have specially trained nurses who are trained in taking care of patients who have gone through specific types of surgeries.”

To celebrate the opening, the Total Joint Center, located on the third floor at PMC, held an open house Tuesday afternoon, during which personnel from the center spoke with members of the public and gave tours of the new center.

Pat Rasmussen, the nurse manager of the Total Joint Center, said the new center now provides a single location for the orthopedic patients and those nurses who are specially trained to care for them.

She said creation of the center was a collaborative effort between the hospital and physicians.

“We really are striving to provide our patients with the best of the best,” she said. “We’ve been doing orthopedics for years, but more and more we are starting to see physicians and surgeons go to their areas of specialty.”

Even nursing is becoming more specialized, she said, creating a need to develop the Total Joint Center.
