Director of Bariatric Surgery
Dr. Garay understands all the complex issues that surround weight related health concerns. He is the only board-certified, fellowship-trained bariatric surgeon in southeast Idaho, and his advanced skills in minimally invasive surgery greatly enhance his patient's recovery time and well-being.
Dr. Garay's oversight and vision have helped PMC's Weight Management Institute develop into a highly respected, interdisciplinary resource for patients throughout southeast Idaho.

Colleen has worked as an NP since 2001. She has chosen to work in weight management/bariatric surgery to help people understand how the choices they make every day affect their health. This is a place where people can get a second chance to get their health back.
Program Lead Dietitian
Joanna completed undergraduate and graduate nutrition programs at Utah State University. She has 12 years of experience as a Registered Dietitian, with eight years of specialized experience in teaching people with diabetes, heart disease and obesity and helping them make healthy lifestyle changes. She enjoys helping people understand nutritional guidelines and how to apply them -- helping them see how healthy eating can fit into their lifestyle AND be enjoyable.
Krista completed her undergraduate nutrition programs at Idaho State University. She educates people on how to improve their diet to become healthier. She also has experience and training to work with diabetics in learning how to manage their diabetes through diet.
Laura graduated with her Master of Physical Therapy from St. Louis University in 1996, and recently completed her Doctor of Physical Therapy from the University of Montana in 2011. Laura is also a Certified Clinical Exercise Specialist with the American College of Sports Medicine, and specializes in working with patients who have metabolic, cardiac, and pulmonary disease. She has worked for Portneuf Medical Center for 14 years in a variety of settings, including cardiac rehab and outpatient orthopedics. Laura now joins the bariatric team and enjoys helping those who suffer with obesity learn how to exercise and live healthier lives.
Dr. Abdallah obtained his medical degree from Alexandria University in Alexandria, Egypt. He completed his residency training in Psychiatry at West Virginia University. Dr. Abdallah is double board certified, General Psychiatry and Consultation Liaison Psychiatry (Psychosomatic Medicine). Dr. Abdallah’s expertise is in treating psychiatric illnesses in-patient with medical conditions. He is passionate about quality care and patient privacy.

Dr. Ater comes to Portneuf Medical Center by way of Vernal, Utah where he has been in private practice for the last five years. Dr. Ater earned his doctorate in clinical psychology from Wheaton College and served his internship at the Dayton V.A. Medical Center. He completed a residency in clinical neuropsychology and neurorehabilitation at the Drake Center in Cincinnati, Ohio and followed that with a second residency in child and family psychology at Ashley Family Clinic in Utah.
Dr. Gardner obtained her doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Idaho State University and completed her internship at the Central Texas V.A. in Waco, Texas. She completed a residency in geropsychology at the Edith Nourse Rogers Memorial V.A. in Bedford, Massachusetts. Dr. Gardner specializes in working with older adults and the unique challenges they face in late adulthood. She also has a strong generalist background and enjoys working with adults of all ages.
Dr. Gardner is trained in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), a values based cognitive-behavior therapy. By using the ACT perspective, she is able to help her clients clarify what they value most in their lives and use these values as a guide to a more meaningful and fulfilling life. She takes a flexible approach to treatment, building on each client's inherent strengths to help them obtain their therapeutic goals.
Dr. Gardner is an amateur photographer who enjoys many different types of crafts. She also loves to cook for her family and experiment with recipes.
Certified Medical Assistant; Insurance Specialist
Darlene comes to Portneuf Medical Center from Savannah, Georgia where she earned her Associate of Science in Medical Assisting. Darlene has worked as a clinical CMA and insurance specialist for 17 years and has gained extensive knowledge in handling of precertification of clinical and surgical procedures. Darlene is very passionate about patient care and patients are her motivation to “make someone’s day just a little bit brighter”.
