Steven L Ater, PsyD

Biographical Sketch

Dr. Ater comes to Portneuf Medical Center by way of Vernal, Utah where he has been in private practice for the last five years. Dr. Ater earned his doctorate in clinical psychology from Wheaton College and served his internship at the Dayton V.A. Medical Center. He completed a residency in clinical neuropsychology and neurorehabilitation at the Drake Center in Cincinnati, Ohio and followed that with a second residency in child and family psychology at Ashley Family Clinic in Utah.

Dr. Ater believes that when it comes to overcoming challenges like serious mental illness or traumatic brain injury, it’s not just a single patient who needs help, support, and education, but those close to the patient as well. He believes that the best outcomes occur when the family is an active and involved part of the healing process.

In his spare time Dr. Ater enjoys outdoor pursuits with his wife and two daughters, playing guitar and cooking foods that make his daughters wish for a box of macaroni and cheese.
